In the 1986 World Series, two teams in the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets were looking to end a World Series drought. The Mets haven’t won a World Series since 1969 (17 years) meanwhile the Red Sox haven’t won since 1918 (68 years). Many Red Sox fans believed that the “Curse of The Bambino” is the reason for the dreadful World Series drought. After the first 4 games of the World Series being won by the road team the Red Sox were the first to break the ice at home with a 4-2 win at Fenway Park to take a 3-2 series lead back to New York with just one win away from a World Series title. In game 6the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead after two innings then the Mets tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning. Red Sox took back the lead 3-2 in the top of the 7th and once again the Mets tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the 8th. The game would go to extra innings in which in the top of the 10th the Red Sox got a home run and knocked in another to take a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the 10th with just three outs away from a World Series title. The Red Sox got the first two batters out and were just one single out away from winning the World Series for the first time in 68 years. NBC began setting up for a postgame celebration for the Red Sox as the Commissioner’s Trophy had been brought into the Red Sox clubhouse along with several bottles of champagne. Then a miracle happened the Mets got within one run to be only behind 5-4 with the tying run on 3rd base. Red Sox closer Bob Stanley faced Mets Mookie Wilson in another do or die at-bat. After 7 pitches and a 2-2 count with one strike away from the Red Sox winning the World Series, Stanley throws a wild pitch with Wilson falling over and waving Mitchell to come home tying the game once again at 5-5. Still in the bottom of 10th with Mets Knight in scoring position at 2nd base, it appeared that Stanley induced a ground ball by Wilson to get an easy out and get out of the 10th inning. Red Sox first basemen Bill Buckner was behind the first base bag near the foul line as he tried to field the ball and the ball went through between his legs. Knight came home for the winning run as the Mets won 6-5 and tied the series 3-3 to send it to a deciding Game 7 the next night. Shea stadium went crazy as the Red Sox suffered their most heartbreaking yet. Legendary broadcaster Vin Scully had legendary call on the bizarre play. So the winning run is at second base, with two outs, three and two to Mookie Wilson. A little roller up along first… behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight, and the Mets win it! Then Vin Scully resumed the legendary call, If one picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words, but more than that, you have seen an absolutely bizarre finish to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets are not only alive, they are well, and they will play the Red Sox in Game 7 tomorrow! The Mets would go on to win Game 7 the next night 8-5 to win the World Series. The devastated Red Sox would not return to a World Series until 18 years later in 2004 (when they finally won it).
